Bits of gold in cream, massage oils?

My mom has some face creams with tiny shaving of gold in them. She also has this massage oil that she bought in Italy that also has shaving of gold in it.
So my question is, what does the gold do? does it have a special component that smoothes out the skin, or gets rid of face pigments? The cream she has is like $150 while the massage oil is $300.. why so expensive?

I think its so expensive because its GOLD and i really dont know why they put it in skin products… maybe it makes your skin have a reaction that gets rid or wrinkles/patches??
