What natural supplements can i take to improve the following?
Depression- Does st. johns wart help w o any horrible side effects?
Memory-How about omega 3?
Weight loss-?
Any suggestions. I have a hard time tolerating prescribed meds. I always have the nasty side effects so i want to try something more natural. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
The other answer is right that St. John’s Wort is very good, but L-Tryptophan is more for sleep and relaxation. Also, most cases will take more than 1-3 days to feel the full effects… it’s more common to take a good 1-3 weeks.
St. John’s Wort also has the warning that it may make you more photosensitive (sensitive to light), so you shouldn’t stay out in the sun too long with it. A couple of other very beneficial options are SAM-e and/or 5-HTP.
As far as memory, Fish Oil (Omega 3) is very good, but it’s not the only natural option. There’s also Ginkgo Biloba, Acetyl L-Carnitine, Phosphatidylserine (abbreviated PS), DMAE, Huperzine A, Bacopa Monnieri (or Monniera), and Vinpocetine that are very effective.
Weight loss is actually one of the hardest ones to make suggestions for on a few reasons, the main one being that there are many aspects to weight loss. Chromium Picolinate is a good option because it helps boost metabolism, but there are many people who don’t get enough help from that. Tonalin CLA and/or L-Carnitine are another couple popular option that helps to burn fat, too.
However, none of the weight loss supplements will help much without some exercise and a healthy meal plan. And exercise doesn’t have to be anything proper or official, you don’t need to go to a gym, wear certain clothes, and you don’t have to be around people who are in better shape. Exercise can be done while you’re at work, watching TV, and even just doing everyday tasks… take the stairs instead of the elevator, park at the far end of the parking lot, walk around the building at work during breaks (especially if you sit all day), work various muscles during the commercials when you watch TV (crunch your abs, stand up repeatedly, lift pop bottles or some sort of weight, etc), run around with the kids for 5 minutes at home (if applicable), etc, etc. It doesn’t have to be “typical exercise”.
Good luck with everything and I hope I helped!
