Can anyone recommend a good guide to keeping chickens?
I plan to keep several bantams for eggs (not meat) so I need a book detailing basic care, health, and nutrition. I’ve looked at Story’s Guide to Chickens but I don’t really need all the info about raising chickens for meat.
Any suggestion are appreciated! Thanks
Storey’s may have info you don’t need regarding meat birds, but this is the best book overall for comprehensive info on general care, health, hatching, husbandry, etc. that I’ve ever found. I recommend this book to everyone who keeps poultry (whether you eat them or not).
Barnyard in your Backyard is another good book for the hobby flock, but it is expensive (about $50). It covers poultry, waterfowl, sheep, etc. as well.
I started with bantams, and I also found it really helpful to bookmark the breed association’s websites for my breeds (mille fleur and silkie breeders clubs). If you want breed-specific info, they are the best resource you can find for your particular birds.
For price and convenience of reference, I really haven’t found a more practical book than Storey’s, though.
